A mod project that promised to bring The Last of Us Part II's multiplayer experience back to PC players has come to an end before it even launched. The developer known as Speclizer announced this week that Sony Interactive Entertainment sent a legal notice demanding the work be shut down, closing the door on months of independent development.

The mod had been in the works since the start of the year, built by a small team aiming to recreate the feel of the long-gone Factions mode, one of the franchise's most beloved elements that never received a full standalone release after Naughty Dog itself canceled its official multiplayer project back in 2023.

In June, the team showed off roughly 25 minutes of gameplay, including custom menus, an exclusive map and full matches between players, which generated significant buzz within the fan community. The project also had a fan-funding page attached, which may have drawn the publisher's attention over potential intellectual property concerns.

According to the creator, the letter received from Sony explicitly asked that the material not be made public, and the decision to comply was made to avoid bigger legal consequences. Still, Speclizer signaled an intent to keep working in the modding scene, without revealing details about future projects.

The case reignites the debate over the line between fan creativity and intellectual property protection by major publishers. While unofficial mods are common for single-player PC games, recreating complex multiplayer systems tends to run into stricter restrictions, since it involves network infrastructure and, often, indirect monetization.

For The Last of Us fans, the episode reinforces the sense that an official multiplayer experience for the franchise remains distant, nearly three years after Naughty Dog canceled its ambitious internal project, which reportedly consumed years of development and a team of hundreds.
